The project Street Photographers aims to document life on the street nowadays. As a project it also aims to bring this topic to an even wider audience through public exhibitions, workshops and publications that can illustrate the diversity of styles found by their talented and widespread authors.
And their definition of street photography?
Interesting imagery, from a public and everyday surrounding, in a decisive moment, and containing people or something related to people.
Last week I showed you how Markus Hartel takes street photography pictures. Yesterday I found out there are more videos like this. Eric Kim from EricKimPhotography.com used the same approach. If you would like to see pictures and listen to his comments check out his website.
After Nick Turpin’s tips on street photography, there are five Martin Parr’s tips published in Financial Times:
- Change your approach. Consider yourself to be a documentary photographer and take this duty to record your family seriously.
- Don’t get everyone to smile; otherwise you’ll end up with the same old family propaganda.
- Photograph people when they aren’t posing. If your kids are sulking, take a picture of that.
- If you have a special meal out, photograph the food of that meal: record the whole event.
- Even if you take photos digitally, print them up, make them into an album and then caption it. Though you remember it now, you won’t in 30 years when you have dementia.
Allow me a personal comment: I think one of the most important tips is the first one – change your approach. Not everyone of us lives in London, Paris, or NYC. And it might seem more difficult to shoot street photography. On the other hand, it is also chalenging. Let’s take pictures which no one else takes. Focus on details, colors, framing, one street, or even one building.

As a part of London by bike photocompetition, Nick Turpin shares his five tips on street photography.
Capture the essence of cycling around London on camera. Whether it’s a two wheel take on the iconic, imposing London landmarks or those hidden gems to be found in the backstreets of the East End, Barclays ‘London by Bike’ is your chance to be rewarded for being snap happy. The competition is open until 4th May 2012.
Eric Kim talks about How to start your own street photography community. It is all about finding right buddy(ies) and stick with them. Since it might seem much doable in large cities, I believe that nowadays internet can help us (the others from small cities and countries) find the proper (although virtual) buddy. Keep finding ;)
Markus Hartel shows what to expect when going on phototour with him with attached Kodak playtouch HD camcorder on Leica M9. You can clearly see how his pictures are taken. Enjoy!
London Festival of Photography – 2012 promo video. I have submitted my Loners series, but with now success. Maybe next time ;) Anyway, if you are in London during June check it out.
